What's new

Fast-tracked recognition for building subcontractors

TAFE NSW can help experienced home building trade subcontractors who have no formal qualifications obtain the relevant qualification for a contractor's licence through a customised, fast-tracked recognition service.

The initiative is in response to advice from the Office of Fair Trading that all new residential home building contractor licensees and supervisor certificate holders must have a relevant qualification from a Registered Training Organisation.

Defence training responds to industry changes

TAFE NSW National Business is working closely with the aviation industry and Qantas Defence Services (QDS) to develop and deliver a responsive and flexible program for existing and new aerospace and defence industry workers.

TAFE NSW – South Western Sydney Institute has developed delivery options for QDS, which maintains aircraft and avionics for a number of major clients, including Qantas and the Royal Australian Air Force. These options cover worker traineeships, flexible workplace-based training, recognition and gap training, and allow employees to have their current skills recognised and to develop the new skills they need in this fast-changing industry. Current QDS employees are participating in the initial stage of an up-skilling program.

For people wanting to join the aerospace industry, the Institute has also developed Aerostart, a new training approach for the industry which allows potential employees to undergo an up-front training program to develop their underpinning knowledge and skills, prior to an on-the-job apprenticeship.

Aerostart will form the basis of TAFE NSW’s future training delivery for the aerospace sector and will be rolled out across the general and commercial aviation sectors.

Department of Housing/Resitech

TAFE NSW is collaborating with the NSW Department of Housing (DoH) project management agency, Resitech, on a new program supporting DoH housing projects from 2007 – 2011.

TAFE NSW pre-vocational carpentry students will be involved in building affordable and adjustable housing for the DoH, completing their training by applying their skills and knowledge in a range of housing construction areas in the Sydney and Hunter regions.

Association membership to benefit staff and students

TAFE NSW – Western Sydney Institute has signed an Institute-wide membership agreement with Computing Technology Industry Association’s (CompTIA) IT Pro membership program for its 3,000 TAFE teachers and students.

IT Pro Australia is the nation’s leading association representing those working in the information and communications technology industry.

‘The industry networking opportunities and benefits available through CompTIA are an invaluable asset in ensuring that TAFE NSW provides employers with IT graduates who are up to date in all the latest technical skills,’ said Jim Shaw, Director of Education for Information Technology, Western Sydney Institute. ‘The benefits program is a bonus that will strengthen the association’s value to members.’

Western Sydney Institute colleges support CompTIA because it provides students and staff with access to a network of IT professionals and IT organisations.

‘This is exciting because it is the largest one-off signing of members in an IT association,’ said Edward Mandla, Regional Director, IT Pro. ‘Immediately our new members experience direct benefits in addition to forums, mentoring and information on how to boost skills.’
