HunterNet and TAFE NSW work to combat regional skill shortages
TAFE NSW – Hunter Institute and HunterNet have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to formalise their working relationship.
HunterNet is a group of 50 small-to-medium enterprises that support the region's engineering industries. The organisation has been looking to establish a base in the Upper Hunter for some time to support mining and allied mining services.
Through its group training arm, HunterNet Group Training Company (HNGTC), the organisation became the first Hunter-based group training company to establish a physical presence in Muswellbrook.
HunterNet and its members held strategic planning sessions in the Upper Hunter and identified critical skill shortages in the area but also opportunities for growth. These two factors confirmed the need for HunterNet to establish a presence in the Upper Hunter, particularly in the Muswellbrook area.
Hunter Institute has been working with the mining industry of the Upper Hunter for some time and in 2005 the Institute established The Mining & Engineering Skills Development Centre at Hunter Institute's Muswellbrook Campus.
The centre was developed to provide a local service for employers who have limited capacity to provide on-the-job training for new recruits. The primary focus of the centre is to meet the needs of local people and organisations within their own region.
Apprentices to benefit from upgrade of the facilities
A $500,000 dollar upgrade to the Metal Fabrication and Welding Workshop at TAFE NSW – Riverina Institute's Young Campus is expected to benefit hundreds of apprentices over the coming years. This is a jointly-funded project between Federal and State governments.
The workshop which was originally built in 1993 underwent a refurbishment last summer, with an upgrade to the workshop and full enclosure of the theory room, with the important benefits of sound insulation and air-conditioning.
The workshop refurbishment will assist the campus in meeting the skill shortages in the metal fabrication and welding trades.
The Institute monitors national and regional trends in employment in order to ensure that investment in building and equipment projects match forecast job prospects.
